Macromedia Flash currently reaches almost 98% of all Internet-enabled PCs. The closest contender is Windows Media (reaching 85%) while QuickTime and RealOne are far behind with 68% and 59%, respectively.
If you need a universal video format, your only choice is Flash. Any other choice would require multiple versions (e.g. Windows Media + QuickTime) to address the compatibility issue.
The latest version of the Flash Player offers both a better image quality and a better compression rate. Depending on your target audience, you may want your videos to be compatible with the newer Flash Player (Version 8) or with the more widespread older version (Version 7)
